The Mechanical Design & Innovation Engineer is part of the team for the Center for Rehabilitation Engineering & Assistive Technology (CREATE) within Mechanical Engineering. This term professional position is responsible for designing mechanical systems, components and mechanisms for wearable robotics and leading a variety of design projects focused on wearable technology for physical augmentation. This position requires strong collaboration, imagination, communication, and organizational skills. The position will contribute to multiple research and development projects and will work closely with highly motivated and talented engineering students, scientific researchers, clinicians, patients and other end-users and stakeholders. The position will collaborate frequently with an interdisciplinary team, and will be involved in everything from brainstorming, invention and concept creation to development, fabrication, testing and documentation. The initial position will be for approximately one year and may be renewable at the end of the year.
The Mechanical Engineering Department provides a broad-based engineering education with opportunities for students to elect courses in areas of study related to any industry and, with careful planning achieve some specialization. The mechanical engineering program prepares an individual to become a practicing engineer who can participate fully in the engineering activities of design, building, operation, production, maintenance, safety, marketing, sales, research, and administration. Numerous research projects allow faculty and students to collaborate in areas of combustion and propulsion, robotic surgery, powered prosthetics, nanotechnology, thermal fluids and medical devices.
Duties and Responsibilities
Inventing, designing and fabricating mechanical/mechatronics systems and sub-systems (of exoskeletons, exosuits, prostheses, smart clothing, wearables)
Leading and managing multiple innovation and design projects
Collaborating with experts in biomechanical engineering, wearable sensing, machine learning, instrumentation, and soft goods (textiles) to plan, develop, assemble and test new technologies
Coordinating with other organizations and stakeholders affected by design development to exchange information, ideas and techniques
Performing device testing, analysis, technical documentation (including external reports to industry and government sponsors) and design reviews
Investigating pertinent design factors such as materials and manufacturing
Assisting with human subject data collections to obtain user feedback, then using this to create or refine technical and user-centric design requirements as part of an iterative design process
Providing technical feedback, guidance and mentorship on mechanical design and fabrication to other members of the lab (including advising undergraduate and graduate students)
Expanding innovation infrastructure, maintaining tooling and fabrication equipment, and training new users on safe and proper tool use
