Lecturer of Bioengineering/Director of Global Medical Innovation

The Department of Bioengineering at Rice University, located in Houston, TX, seeks applications for a creative and motivated individual for the position of Director of the Masters in Bioengineering – Global Medical Innovation Program, with a start date of summer 2018. The Global Medical Innovation (GMI) program (gmi.rice.edu) is one track within our suite of professional masters programs leading to the Master in Bioengineering (MBE). GMI is an intensive program designed to educate and train engineers for careers in medical technology through education in innovation, emerging-market design projects, and internships. The track builds on Rice's top-ranked bioengineering programs, its award-winning design facilities at the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen, the successful history of innovation in the developing world with Rice 360°: Institute for Global Health Technologies, and strong collaborations with the Texas Medical Center.
We encourage applications from persons with a master’s degree, PhD, or MD with an interest in teaching and in working with collaborators in the Texas Medical Center and the medical device industry. The GMI Director is a non-tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Lecturer. For applicants who are interested in long-term growth in the teaching professions, Rice also offers a new Teaching Professor track.
The individual would be fully engaged in the GMI degree program. Candidates must have completed a master’s degree with substantial experience in industry or a PhD or MD with experience in bioengineering/biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering. Experience working with the medical device industry is preferred.
The position has specific responsibilities:
1.Teach two year-long course sequences in Medical Technology Innovation and Design 2.Oversee a year-long Industry Seminar Series 3.Oversee a summer internship experience for the GMI students in Costa Rica, involving collaboration with local universities and clinicians to develop design projects as well as a global industry internship working in a medical device company 4.Serve as an industry liaison for undergraduate and graduate students to promote internship and career opportunities 5.Coordinate school-wide programs with the Director of Professional Science and Engineering Masters Programs (i.e., seminars, recruitment, assessment)
